Fes: The Trip to the Souk

An experience for all five senses…

Grocery shopping in Morocco is very far from the supermarkets with freezer-wrapped packages in the West. Although a few chain supermarkets have made their entrance into Souk Lahcen buys orangessome of the bigger cities in Morocco, most Moroccans continue to do their shopping in the souks, where they know that they can get fresh ingredients (for cheaper, too!). Since very few Moroccan families living in the Medina own a refrigerator, most people go to the souk every day to buy their groceries for the day’s home-cooked meal, which is most commonly either a tagine or couscous. They make the rounds to the different vendors to pick up all of the necessary ingredients.
